Bookcases in Cumbrian ElmBoth these bookcases are made from beautiful brown elm, with all the wild and striking grain that you only get from hedgerow trees.
The one on the left is 5'6" high, 3' wide and 12" deep, with two drawers 5" deep. The drawer handles are made from the same elm.
In both cases, the backs have been made from ¼" birch ply, carefully grooved and dyed to match the elm. This saves both weight and cost, but the backs can be made from elm boards if required.
The bookcase on the right is larger, at 6'3" tall and has no drawers, but an extra shelf. Both were designed to fit precisely into specific spaces, which is just one of the advantages of custom-built furniture.
Both bookcases are finished with oil and then waxed. This provides a durable surface that wears well and can easily be restored if damaged. Unlike varnished wood it gets more beautiful with the passage of time.
